Synopsis:
The second half of the twentieth century saw a great deal of progress, of both the best and the worst kind. New technologies brought with them more than their fair share of fears and health scandals. Nuclear power is perhaps the most obvious example, but new food technologies have also raised serious concerns. In recent years, the public has become aware of the collective poisoning that results from intensive farming and from the industrialisation of food production, yet we nevertheless continue to consume these products. There are obviously both cultural and economic reasons for this, but they are not the only ones. We love our potato crisps, however bad they may be for our health, and we remain hooked on sweets and candies, even though they have no nutritional content whatsoever. So why is this? What leads us to consume all this junk food, to the point where it is making us more and more unhealthy? Why are we so hooked on this stuff?
