Synopsis:
Pauline, a self-employed nurse in the mining district between Lens and Lille, raises her two children alone and cares for her father, a former steelworker, as if he were her third child. She is devoted, generous and kind; her patients all love her and count on her. Yet nobody sees that Pauline is in touch with an increasingly harsh everyday social reality that means she is gradually becoming ready for a commitment that will mark a complete break with her family’s past. A nationalist party, growing in popularity and in quest of respectability, is going to take advantage of her popularity by asking her to be its candidate in local elections.
