Synopsis:
Having been cheated by the colonial administration which, in exchange for all her savings, has given her paddy fields that are uncultivatable due to being regularly flooded by the great tides of the Pacific Ocean, a mother struggles to survive with her two children, Joseph, aged 20 and 16-year-old Suzanne. Meanwhile, the threat of expulsion from this temporary concession by the land administrators hangs constantly over their heads.Amazing reserves of energy and hope keep this matriarch alive as she scrimps and scrapes with a painstaking, ingenious and lucid form of madness, so afraid is she of the final departure – which she knows is inevitable – of her children.Anger, love sensuality, resignation, belly laughs, sadness, and death all lie at the core of this moving story.
