Synopsis:
Soraya, age 24, grew up in New York in a working-class community of Palestinian refugees. One day, she discovers that her grandfather’s savings from a lifetime of work remained frozen in a bank account in Jaffa, Palestine since he was deported in 1948. In light of this information, she decides to fulfill a wish she has always dreamed of, to “return” to Palestine. From the first instant she arrives, the nightmare begins, with the stream of humiliations to which her people are subjected, and she quickly discovers the reality of her broken, despoiled country without hope. As she has done her whole life, she hangs on and tries to survive through hard work. She then meets a young man, Emad, who, unlike her, and like many of his compatriots, dreams of only one thing: leaving. Out of growing anger and budding love, an insane plan develops, to get all of the grandfather’s money back in spite of everything, even if it means becoming an outlaw. Soraya and Emad are forced to flee. They pass through Israeli territory, where they relive the bitter traces of paradise lost, and their flight leads them to the sea, the object of all their unachievable desires.
