Synopsis:
This is the story of a Franco-Belgian bank, Dexia, whose prime mission is to finance the general interest by lending to the local authorities. Its ambitious managers got caught up all too quickly in the whirlwind of world finance and took more and more risks. They flooded even France with toxic loans that are going to weigh down the municipalities and hospitals for years. In 2008, the subprime crisis shook Dexia. The Dexia scandal has up to now cost France and Belgium €20 billion. No one knows what is in the belly of the bank, which may have to be bailed out by the taxpayer. So, what has happened? The Belgian and French States did not seek to determine who was responsible for this crash. It would seem that the Dexia affair is not anyone’s fault. Or perhaps it is the fault of all of us. For how long will citizens continue to accept to foot the bill for the bad habits of finance?
