Two Belgian shorts shortlisted for the Oscars

Two Belgian French-speaking shorts, May Day and Icare, have reached the shortlist of the “Live Action Short Film” category, which has been announced this Monday December 17th.

Produced by Eklektik Productions and directed by Olivier Magis and Fedrik De Beul, May Day, is the first Belgian French-speaking short film in the shortlist. In Thierry’s living room, several people have gathered. None of them know each other but they are all there to try and fulfil the same dream. They want to find a job…and quickly. But we’re in Brussels, so nothing goes quite as planned.

Second Belgian French-speaking short film competing, Icare directed by Nicolas Boucart and produced by Helicotronc. The story takes place on a tiny island topped with steep cliffs, where stands up front of the sea one single house. Despite the huge developments in modern aviation, an inventor is obsessed with achieving his dearest dream: to fly using nothing but his arms. For him, only a pure, light, innocent soul is capable of such a feat. 11-year-old Joseph seems to be the perfect candidate.

Both films have been granted by the Selection Film Commission of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

The nomination of the 5 finalists will be announced on January 22nd.

The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
