"Our Mothers" by Cesar Diaz will represent Belgium at the Oscars

The National selection committee has chosen, this Friday 23rd of August, Our Mothers by Cesar Diaz to represent Belgium for the « Best International Film Award »  during the 92nd Oscars edition.

The jury, composed by six cinema professionals from French and Dutch speaking parts of Belgium – Jan Temmerman (president, critic), Hilde de Laere (producer Woestijnvis), Malin Sarah Gozin (scriptwriter), Dan Cukier (president of Univerciné) , Christelle Mahy (producer) and Nicolas Gilson (programmer Le Palace) - praised the cinematographic qualities of this first feature film, the universality of its thematic as well as the decency and accuracy with which society issues are drawn by the Belgian Guatemalan director.

Already selected in many festivals and sold in different territories, Our Mothers has been awarded the Caméra d’or Award at Cannes Film Festival this year.

Our Mothers, produced by Need Productions, is set in Guatemala, 2018. The country is riveted on the trial of the military officers who started the civil war. The victims’ testimonials keep pouring in. Ernesto, a young anthropologist at the Forensic Foundation, identifies people who have gone missing. One day, through an old lady’s story, Ernesto thinks he has found a lead that will allow him to find his father, a guerillero who disappeared during the war. Against his mother’s wishes, he flings himself body and soul into the case, looking for truth and resilience.

Our Mothers received development and production aid from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation’s Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel, with support from Proximus, Eurimages, the Aide au cinémas du monde fund (managed by the French National Centre for Cinematography and the Institut Français), Inver Tax Shelter, the Belgian Federal Government’s Tax Shelter scheme and SACEM.

Our Mothers will be released late september in Belgium (Cinemien) and in France in April 2020 (Pyramide). It will be distributed worldwide by Pyramide.

The 92nd Ceremony of the Oscars will take place February 9th 2020 at Dolby Theatre of Los Angeles.
