Special Orizzonti jury prize for Tango libre

Saturday September 8, Frédéric Fonteyne’s Tango libre was awarded the special prize of the Venice Mostra del Cinema’s Orizzonte jury, presided by Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino.

Tango Libre, which opened the “Orizzonti” section on August 30, was well received both by the public and the jury, and remained a potential winner throughout the festival.

Frédéric Fonteyne is, after all, an old acquaintance of the Mostra. In 1999 actress Nathalie Baye was winner of the best actress award for his Une liaison pornographique, and in 2004 La femme de Gilles received critical acclaim.

Tango libre is Fonteyne’s fourth feature, this time a somewhat more light-hearted drama. It tells the story of prison ward JC (François Damiens), who dreams of becoming a tango dancer, but whose endeavours are thwarted by two convicts - Dominic (Sergi Lopez) and Fernand (Jan Hammenecker). This Belgian Artemis Production, which received Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel support, will open forthcoming Namur Film Festival on September 28 and is scheduled for release in Belgian theatres on November 7 (Cineart) and in French theatres on November 21 (Rézo).
