The Brand New Testament on The Oscars shortlist

This Thursday morning in Hollywood, the Executive Committee of the Best Foreign Language Film category for the Academy Awards announced the shortlist of nine films that remain in contention for the award after the first round of voting.

The Brand New Testament by Jaco Van Dormael will face Embrace of the Serpent by Ciro Guerra (Colombia),  A War by Tobias Lindholm (Danemark), The Fencer by Klaus Härö (Finland), Mustang by Deniz Gamze Ergüven (France), Labyrinth of Lies by Giulio Ricciarelli (Germany), Son of Saul by László Nemes (Hungary), Viva by Paddy Breathnach (Irland) and Theeb by Naji Abu Nowar (Jordania)

Nine films among the 81 submitted for consideration in the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Language Film category have advanced to the next round of voting. The nine shortlisted films are a result of a first round of voting after Academy members screened the 81 films submitted for consideration this year in the category. 6 films emerge directly from the votes of the Academy members. Three additional selections are added by the Academy’s Executive Committee. The 5 nominated films will be announced on January 14th 2016.

A week after its nomination at the Golden Globes, this announcement demonstrates the level of interest the film has received both from Hollywood press members as well as from members of the Academy. The film is also in the running for the Satellite Awards.
