The Free Quarter is a documentary, experienced from the inside and reported by its inhabitants. This film plunges us into the history and life of the neighbourhood of La Baraque. This ‘self-running’ neighbourhood of gypsy caravans, lodges and other self-built homes, on the outskirts of Louvain-la-Neuve, near Brussels, has been there for 40 years! In La Baraque, every day brings a day for collective inventing! In 2014, the equilibrium of this alternative community was rocked by the building of a car park with over 3.000 spaces! How is the district going to be able to survive that? What solutions will the inhabitants come up with to enable them to continue with their experiment in alternative living? The Free Quarter faces the reality, and reinvents what is possible.
