Subtitled “about an attempt to symbolically compensate the dead, for the use of the living”, Rwanda. A travers nous, l’humanité… was shot in Rwanda in April 2004, during the performances of the show Rwanda 94 within the framework of the 10th commemorations of the Tutsi genocide and the massacre of moderate Hutus. How can theatre question reality in front of the original actors of the story told on stage? The intense, active and cathartic answer of the audience in Rwanda opens on the survivors current concerns. What is life for them, 10 years after the genocide? In phase with the play, Rwanda. A travers nous, l’humanité… lets the survivors of the genocide speak -from Butare, Nyamata, Kaduha and Bisesero- from the standpoint of their reality now during this period of mourning, where the memory of the genocide is sought after and established through traumatic awakenings, evocations, the dignified unearthing and burial of victims, the fears and concerns in the face of prevailing threats. They express their deep resentment toward us following the desertion and the knowing silence of the international community during the genocide, but also the exclusion, the discriminations and the violence which is still their lot.
