"On the Edge of the World" wins two awards at Mar del Plata!

The new film by Guérin van de Vorst and Sophie Muselle has won the Best Feature Length Film and the Best Acting Award at the 2024 Mar del Plata Film Festival!

The Mar del Plata International Film Festival, organized by the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA), promotes cinematographic and audiovisual creativity in all its forms. It showcases films from around the globe while supporting thematic and stylistic diversity. The tradition of classic cinema coexists here with emerging trends, new voices, and cutting-edge technologies.

Alexia, a strong-willed, idealistic 25-year-old, arrives as a trainee nurse on the closed ward of a psychiatric hospital, where she meets Joëlle, the head nurse, who teaches her the job. Alexia is touched by the anger of Mila, a 20-year-old patient who thinks she has no business being there. Despite Joëlle’s warnings about keeping her distance from patients, Alexia gets closer to Mila and does her utmost to try to get her out.

For the 39th edition of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, the jury of the International Competition awarded the Astor Piazzolla Award for Best Feature Length Film to At the Edge of the World by Guérin van de Vorst and Sophie Muselle. Produced by Wrong Men and internationally distributed by Reel Suspects, the film had its world premiere at the Argentinian festival.

"A unanimous decision that celebrates a cinematographic work that transcends the mundane, revealing the delicate topography of human feelings with a subtlety that penetrates the soul of the viewer", declared the jury of the International Competition.

Furthermore, the jury also honored Mara Taquin for her role in the film by awarding her the Astor Piazzolla Award for Best Acting:

"Mara Taquin for Au Bord du monde, who transmutes each frame into a visual poem. Her performance is an archaeological journey into the depths of the human soul, unearthing the complexity of a nurse whose empathy becomes an act of resistance and hope."

Let’s also highlight the selection of the co-productions The Most Precious of Cargoes by Michel Hazanavicius (Les Films du Fleuve, International Competition - Astor Piazzolla Special Jury Award), Vermiglio by Maura Delpero (Versus production, New Auteurs), and Peaches Goes Bananas by Marie Losier (Michigan Films, Altered States Competition).

The festival took place in Buenos Aires from November 21 to December 1, 2024.
