The São Paulo International Short Film Festival selects three French-speaking Belgian short films!

The short films “Autokar”, “Rio Remains Beautiful”, and “The Carp and the Child” are part of the official selection at the 36th edition of the SPISFF, taking place from August 21 to 31, 2025, in São Paulo!

The São Paulo International Short Film Festival aims to foster greater exchange between Latin American and international productions. With a focus more on culture than competition, the festival seeks to spotlight films that contribute to the development of short filmmaking in terms of aesthetics, specific formats, and production methods.

For its 36th edition, Autokar by Sylwia Szkiladz has been selected in the International Program section. The film, produced by Ozu Productions and internationally distributed by Miyu Distribution, has already screened at major festivals, including the Berlinale and IndieLisboa.

In the 1990s, 8 years-old Agata leaves Poland for Belgium. Anxious about her journey, the little girl writes a letter to her father back home, but her pencil falls out and gets lost on the bus. Forced to overcome her shyness, she crawls between the seats in search of the pencil, plunging into a fantastic world populated by strange half-human, half-animal passengers. At the tender age of 8, her eyes transform the reality of migration into an initiatory experience.

In the Unlimited Showcase section, audiences can discover the new short film by Felipe Casanova, Rio Remains Beautiful, which had its world premiere this year at Locarno. The director also produced the film, in collaboration with Un Point Bleu Pâle.

Within the revelry of Rio's Carnival, Ilma writes to her son. How does she sense his presence in the crowd? Suspended in time, the celebration becomes a space of memory and political resistance.

Following its selection at Clermont-Ferrand and more recently at Annecy, The Carp and the Child by Arnaud Demuynck and Morgane Simon and produced by La Boîte,... Productions is included in the Kids and Teen’s Showcase at SPISFF.

A child goes carp fishing. But he has the bad idea of bringing his little dog with him. Between the puppy, a frog and a duck, it's not easy to catch a fish...

Also worth noting is the presence of Belgian production company La Boîte,… Productions in the credits of the short film Le Tunnel de la nuit by Annechien Strouven.

See you in São Paulo from August 21 to 31, 2025, to discover these films and celebrate Belgian French-speaking short cinema!
