The FNC Has Selected Three French-Speaking Belgian Films!
For its 74th edition, the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (FNC) in Montreal has selected three French-speaking Belgian films: “Hair, Paper, Water”, “Summer Hit Machine”, and “Bobel’s Kitchen”.
For over 50 years, the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma has showcased national and international auteur cinema, from emerging voices to major works, highlighting their originality and diversity. As the oldest film festival in Canada and a major cultural event in Quebec, the FNC presents more than 200 works each year from 60 different countries, celebrating the best of contemporary cinema.
Hair, Paper, Water… by Nicolas Graux and Trương Minh Quý continues its journey through various international festivals. The film is produced by Dérives and sold internationally by Lights On.
In a cave, more than sixty years ago, she was born. Now she lives in a village, with many children and grandchildren to look after. Sometimes, she dreams of her dead mother calling her home—to the cave. The film captures fleeting moments of her daily life and the transmission of her fragile language, Ruc, to her grandchildren.
After its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival, Summer Hit Machine by Jérôme Vandewattyne will be presented at the FNC in the “Temps Ø” section. The film is produced by Kozak Films.
Boogie punk rockers Chevalier Surprise enter a plush Ardennes studio to cover Machiavel’s Fly. Behind the glass: Marius, eccentric label manager chasing a second “Summer Hit Machine” crown — and losing him- self in Elvis-haunted nights. In the shadows, his alter ego Allan plots the band’s collapse, aided by Delphine, a social media nerd with a killer smile and a sharper agenda. Fame, sabotage, and the absurd machinery of music and film, served as a dark comedy.
After touring numerous festivals, Bobel’s Kitchen by Fiona Rolland, produced by La Cambre, has been selected in the “P’tits Loups” section.
Bobel, a poisonous little mushroom, dreams of becoming a cook at his village market. But the prejudices of the villagers will make his task difficult.
In addition, the minority co-production also supported by the CCA, the short film Loynes by Dorian Jespers, co-produced by Wrong Men and sold internationally by Square Eyes will compete in the “International Competition.”
Finally, we should note the presence of Umedia in the credits of Planètes by Momoko Seto, also featured in the “P’tits Loups” section.
The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma will take place in Montreal from October 8 to 19, 2025.
