"Jahia’s Summer" by Olivier Meys to have its World Premiere at Göteborg 2025!
"Jahia’s Summer" and "Mexico 86" have been selected for the 48th edition of the Göteborg International Film Festival
The Göteborg Film Festival is the primary film festival in Scandinavia and, with an audience of 200,000 visitors per year, one of the largest festivals in the world. Göteborg also aims to serve as a meeting place for the Nordic audiovisual industry. In 2000, the festival created the Nordic Film Market, which is now the largest specific marketplace for new Nordic films.
The new film by Olivier Meys, Jahia's Summer, has been selected in the Journey category, which brings together the best recent international films in one section. Produced by Michigan, the film will have its world premiere at the Swedish festival on January 25th.
Jahia, a teenager from Burkina Faso, lives in a center for asylum seekers in Belgium. With no prospects, Jahia has a fear of the future that isolates her and prevents her from living. One day, she meets Mila, a young Belarusian girl, who drags her along in her crazy energy. It's the beginning of summer, and of a friendship that will change her life.
César Diaz's Mexico 86 is also part of the 2025 selection at the Göteborg Film Festival. The film had its world premiere last August at the Locarno Festival on the Piazza Grande. Produced by Need Productions and sold internationally by Goodfellas, the film follows the journey of Maria, a Guatemalan revolutionary activist exiled in Mexico City for many years, where she continues her political activities. When her 11-year-old son comes to live with her, she faces a heart-wrenching choice between her role as a mother and that of an activist.
Let us also highlight the presence of no fewer than eight French-speaking Belgian co-productions: Vermiglio by Maura Delpero (Versus production, International Competition), Julie Keeps Quiet by Leonardo Van Dijl (Les Films du Fleuve, Journey), The Most Precious of Cargoes by Michel Hazanavicius (Les Films du Fleuve, Gala), Everybody Loves Touda by Nabil Ayouch (Velvet Film, Focus: Disobedience), Soundtrack to a Coup d’État by Johan Grimonprez (Onomatopée Films, Journey), Peaches Goes Bananas by Marie Losier (Michigan Films, Journey), The Flats by Alessandra Celesia (Thank You & Good Night, Journey), and L’Empire by Bruno Dumont (Novak Prod, Masters).
