Three Belgian Films Presented at the Transilvania International Film Festival 2025!
Belgian cinema will shine in Transylvania this year, with three films selected for the 24th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF). The films "Merckx", "Make It Look Real", and "Maldoror" will be showcased in different sections of the festival.
Recognized as one of the major cinematic events in Eastern Europe, TIFF celebrates independent and auteur cinema, highlighting bold, innovative, and deeply human films. With an eclectic lineup featuring world premieres, retrospectives, and competitions, the festival has become a true platform for emerging and established talents from around the globe.
Merckx, directed by Christophe Hermans and Boris Tilquin and produced by Kaos Films, will be featured in the Supernova TIFF section. After a notable world premiere at IFFR, this documentary revisits cycling icon Eddy Merckx, a central figure in a Belgium undergoing profound change in the 1960s and 70s.
From 1967 to 1975, Eddy Merckx won everything, devoured everything and left nothing to his rivals. In less than a decade, he established himself as the absolute icon of world cycling. But by dint of his triumphs, the ‘Cannibal’ ended up dividing people. How can you keep cycling when admiration gives way to hatred? This documentary traces the extraordinary career of the greatest champion of all time.
Make It Look Real by Danial Shah, produced by Atelier Graphoui, and previously selected for a world premiere at IDFA 2024, will appear in the What’s Up, Doc? section.
In Pakistan, a local photo studio becomes a cultural hub, intertwining personal dreams and community connections. The filmmaker, a displaced native, collaborates with local photographers, revealing a visual symphony where boundaries of race and identity dissolve.
Lastly, Maldoror by Fabrice du Welz, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, will screen in the Full Moon section. This Belgian psychological thriller is produced by Frakas Productions and represented internationally by WTFilms.
When two girls go missing, Paul Chartier, an impulsive young police recruit, is assigned to “Maldoror”. This secret unit has been set up to monitor a dangerous sex offender. When the operation fails, fed up with the limits of the legal system, Chartier embarks on a solitary hunt to bring down the culprits
The festival will take place from Friday, June 13 to Sunday, June 22, 2025, in Cluj!
