In 1967, in the midst of the American military escalation in Vietnam, philosophers Bertrand Russell and Jean-Paul Sartre organized the first international citizens' tribunal to investigate war crimes committed by the United States and to judge their actions under international law. Twenty years after the Nuremberg Trials, this historically unprecedented initiative revived the idea of international criminal justice and opened the way for a new form of civil resistance to state crimes.
