On the evening of her birthday, Mariam learns that her husband, who was supposed to return in less than two weeks, has cancelled his return. That same night, another event disturbs her sleep: Anush, a young girl from the village, is giving birth under difficult conditions. Mariam, who has lost all hope of seeing her family together again any time soon, now has the responsibility of supporting Anush and getting her to hold on to the idea of a better future.
